It's not much, but it is a start for the home gym. Since I lost all my gym equipment in the fire, it had to happen because living so far away from a gym is terrible. So I am starting small as it is cost effective and will start getting bigger and better equipment as time goes on. Goals to have dumbbells up to 45lbs by August. And hopefully a bench as well. But for now I got yoga gear and light weights and a pullup system. Wish me luck! #gym #homegym #dumbbells #yoga #thightoner #kettlebell #gymlife #fitnesslife #fit4life #itsastart #Hashtag #SimmyDizzle #yogamat #yogablock #tensionbands #bands #fitnessbands #yogaball #ballislife @fit.healthy.dad has a better set. Post run #selfie. Man its warm out but it was great. Happy to be #running again. As per always used my @runtastic app to track my run. It wasn't nearly as long as I hoped it would be or nearly as fast. But that's what happens when you dont actually run for a few months. You lose something. All I've done for the past 4 months is lift heavy add weights. And I love it way more than running. But I need cardio. So I'm going to start hitting these runs more often. Weights in the morning. Cardio in the afternoon. Seems like a good balance to me. Oh yeah. Listened to the #Slayer album #ReignInBlood probably the single best album to run to. It helps with the pace for 5km in 30 minutes. Which is my goal to get back to. #ShutUpAndGotoTheGym #JogAwayTheFat #Cardio #TrackApp #FitnessLife #SimmyDizzle #NoFilter #Hashtag #SmallTown #WayTooHot #Drenched #NoRunningPartner #HardToKeepPace #HellYeahBaby via Instagram http://ift.tt/28LWpBo

After a month of bad dieting my gut really shows. Guess this is the evidence I need to stop eating pizza everytime work supplies it. Which has been a lot lately. Back onto the regular diet tomorrow. Gotta kill that stomach again. With that said. Pressing 90's just became a thing. I feel like I could do 95s but I don't want to press my luck too much. Next chest day I'll go for 95s and hopefully I'll be a little slimmer. I was supposed to be working back today but I ended up working arms instead. Just wasn't feeling #BackDay. But I was feeling arms. So #ArmDay it is! I love my #gym 3 specially when its an empty one. Which it was today. Gotta love it. Got a great pump on. #SimmyDizzle pushed his limits with 5 exercises. 5 sets per exercise. Rep out on each set. This pushed my limits for sure. #Fitness is a lifestyle though and u am late to discover that. In my 30s and I am trying to undo the last 8 years of neglect. 60lbs overweight still. Although I've already lost 60lbs. It's time to change my training and push harder again and crush out those last 60lbs. Been almost 6 months maitaining the #WeightLoss so now it's time to start losing again. It's still my set. #ISYMFS. #IronBorn #IronAddict #GymTime #Selfie #GymSelfie #gymharderthanme Let's do this! #SimmyDizzle training. So yeah. My form is a lot better now I feel. Still room for improvement but it's coming along, I'll step it up to a higher weight next time and focus on keeping my form at that weight. #BackDay so obviously it's flex day too. Not sure why but I always choose to do a flex day on backday. The #gym is empty just the way #SimmyDizzle likes it. SimmyDizzle being me of course. Lol. Feel good today though. Focusing on form instead of weight. Trying to get my deadlifts on point. It's a work in progress so I'm sticking low weight but high rep. Maintaining form. It's what people criticize the most about my lifting is my #deadlifts. So I'm working on it. In the meantime. 17" Biceps are still a thing. #Fitness - The Stair Machine #CardioMode

0

Whats this new fancy thing

Table of Contents

    Stair Machine

My work recently added this new fancy stair machine to our work gym.  It has directly influenced and changed the way I proceed about my gym life and activities.  Before I avoided the dreaded word Cardio, but now I am more focused on it than ever.  With the stair machine I find I get an amazing workout before I even get to my weight training.

    How Long

I focus on doing the maximum amount of time the machine lets me go for, it does 30 minutes before entering into the 5 minute cooldown phase.  This has been an amazing choice as my warm up before I get into the core part of my workout, which is the weight training.

    Intensity

The intensity I use (or speed) for the stair climbing is incremental.  Every minute that goes by I increase the level by 1 until it gets too fast for me, this usually happens around the 11-12 minute mark. Then I start lowering the intensity down but on the way down I never go below 5 and from there I will go up and down in intensity until my 35 minutes is done.

    Cardio it up

For those whom know my mantra of the gym its that Cardio Sucks and Kills my Gains.  And anyone reading this can call me on it, but for me if I train straight cardio I find that my muscles get wrecked by it quickly.  I would rather work with the weights than ever touch cardio.  But this machine is changing my view on that.  The benefits of the stair machine is great and whatever musclemass I would lose from cardio I know I'll gain back or prevent loss of during my next phase of my normal gym routine, which is my weight training.

    Killing it

Lately since this machine entered my life I have been killing it, the cardio that is. Which I never do, I gave up running a while back because of the pain in my knee's it caused. I find the stair machine quite a different entity, my knee's don't hurt from doing it, so I am encouraged by that to keep at it. And as a result I'm burning a lot of calories and enjoying every minute I get on that machine.

    What about the Weights

Well if you know me, or read my blog you know that I ain't giving up the weights, I love lifting, pulling, dragging, curling and pretty much anything else that has todo with weight training, they ain't leaving my life anytime soon. In fact I May just kick it up a notch now especially if this cardio helps me lose some fat, which I am still struggling with, but thats another story for another blog post.

#Fitness - Oh the feels of an Empty Gym!

    0

Going to the gym is always a special feeling, I especially enjoy it when I get there and it is empty.

Its something kind of special being the only one in the gym. I miss this. The cold iron everyday.

Some day I will get to enjoy a nice empty gym like this again.  For now I am stuck with one that always has people in it, dirty people who don't clean the machines when they are done.

It is a terrible feeling getting into the gym and seeing people sweating all over the equipment and not cleaning it up before they leave.  Something I cannot stand.  I'm a larger man, overweight, and the last thing I want to do is have to clean up some fit persons sweat off the equipment before I can use it, its like they see me, an overweight man entering their gym, and they want me to be uncomfortable and leave.

I won't let them win.  I will always work out, even if I have to clean up the equipment first.  But still.. I prefer an empty gym.

And with that said,  it is new years, the resolutioners that normally plague my gym aren't here this year.  Perhaps they are just late bloomers, or perhaps they decided their way to make their goal was to adjust their eating habits instead of their gym time.  Either way it is very odd.  Very odd indeed.

I'm finding it quite abnormal to see an empty gym this late into January. Perhaps my manliness is scaring them away, or maybe they forgot how to get into the gym, but this is a tad bit out of the ordinary.  Maybe it is because it is a leap year, or that it was a full moon on christmas.  But something is extremely off with regards to the gym activity this year.

    But I digress.

If you are hitting the gym hard this new year and beyond, whether before new year or after, hit up the comments below and let me know why.

    #Fitness - #ChestDay post workout 'feelings'.

Post workout feelings this Chest Day

    Table of Contents

      Those Feels

Have you ever worked so hard towards meeting or reaching a goal that you felt sick to your stomach when there wasn't immediate results?  I know I feel that way everytime I work chest.  It has been a very, VERY long time since I have been able to push 2 plate.  I'm getting back to it but it makes me feel a little sick knowing it is taking so long.

When I was younger this was easier to do, I was going up 10-15lbs a month or so, no I'm lucky to go up 5 a month.  No matter how I train.  I feel that with my new training being a slower more controlled to prevent injury of this old man body of mine that the effect is taking even longer.  Of course I'd love to blame a slower training on slower gains but the truth of the matter is I need to train properly and I just don't like things taking so long.

      I am impatient.

I'm in my early 30's but I feel so much worse, having had a bad go (accidents, broken limbs, and so on) it just feels as if it has taken its toll on me and I want to get my old body back sooner than later.  I know there is no easy way to make it happen.  As a young man it still took me a long time to sculpt out my body, but as an older gentleman I am finding it much harder to get back in the swing of things and getting my body back on track.

      What I'm lifting

On chest day I tend to start out with my heaviest exercises first, wel starting with medium weight and working my way up to my heavier weights obviously, this is where I bench or chest press.  I keep this first so I am training this way with the optimal body strength.  So basically me at my best so I reduce risk of injury.  I'm not sure if this is the best way to train though.  I guess I am going to have to read some books/epubs on this so I get a better idea on what to do.

From there though I move into fly's, inclined press, cable cross, etc, basically all the exercises I can do to focus on the chest.  It has worked in the past to get me to bulk up chest wise, but I also need to burn more calories, as I am trying to lose weight while building more muscle, again sometimes I wish there was an easy button for this.

      #Fitness - The joys of #LegDay in the #Gym

      0

Probably one of the best days in the world, is Leg Day.

      Table of Contents

        The Change

I make no bones about it, Leg Day is probably one of my favourite days if not my favourite day in the gym.  I always feel great after Leg Day, sore, exhausted, yet energised, it gives me a sense of well being.  I don't know why but it really does change my mood, of all the days to train, whenever I train legs I find myself in almost a state of euphoria even though the metal plate in my ankle aches with each rep of each set, its almost as if it is a challenge to push harder and since I love a good challenge, I always do.

Today I challenged myself in a good way, I kept my squats to a lower weight then usual and focused more on form then on weight.  5 sets of 10 reps, all good and healthy, not really a challenge for my weight, but the challenge was keeping proper form.  Helping to avoid injury with my lower back and knee's by performing each squat carefully and ensuring my posture and form were correct.  That has been my goal.

Like the squats I continued to pursue better form for all my Leg Day exercises, thus avoiding injury.  Hamstring Curls, Leg Extensions, Leg Press, all of them were better than normal.  Maintaining proper body position on the equipment helps keep my joints safe or so I am told and that is my new goal.  To keep myself healthy and improve my overall lifestyle.

In the past I've been reckless with my exercises and lately I've been focusing more and more on avoiding injury because I just had a feeling it was coming if I kept training the way I did.  So I am quite glad I made this decision to improve my training methods by avoiding exercising in ways that could lead to injury.  So lowering the weight and performing my exercises under better control and with proper posture and form I feel has ultimately helped me avoid injury but in the long run will help me be able to go heavier and keep myself healthier.

        The Result

The result of the changes above are quite simple, less injury, longer training times, slower improvements, but again, less injury, or chance of injury.  By removing or lowering the chance of injury I feel that I am actually making it easier and faster to train, because if I injure myself I won't be able to train, and if I can't train I won't be able to improve.  So its a better scenario, a winning scenario I feel.

I cannot fathom why it took me so long to adjust to this safer style of training, maybe it was because I was in a hurry to lose weight, or maybe its because I was simply ill informed of what could happen, but the more I look into my health and fitness.

The more I read about training habits and appropriate ways to train and how to train, the more I realize I have been putting myself in a lot of danger and risk of injury.  So after today's exercise being the first with this new training methodology I have to say I will adopt this into the rest of my training.

I feel better, but I know it will be the right way.  I will continue to research and train based on what I've read and keeping myself healthy first, focused on prevention of injury followed by loss of weight, and third building a nice body and form.  I've got a lifetime to train, so I am going to train properly and take my time and stop rushing for gains and success. I'll get where I want to be!.

        #Fitness - 5 hundred rep #ArmDay!

        0
One thing my trainer and friend Mic and I enjoy doing at the gym are 5 hunnits (or 500 rep exercise).  The goal is to do 5 different exercises, but each exercise at medium weight and 100 reps per exercise.  You can do them in sets, or all at once, although if you can do them all at once (all 100 in a single set) then your simply not using enough weight.  But if you want to push through the burning, do it!

I enjoy this exercise and I haven't done it in a while, that is, I hadn't done it in awhile, then yesterday happened.  I successfully completed a round of 5 hunnits at for Arm Day.  Or Armpocalypse as it should be known.  Today I can barely lift my arms and it feels great.  My muscles are sore and well, bigger.  Its why I love this.

The swelling won't last long, but my arms will be slightly bigger even once the swelling goes down.  Thats truly the pump for you.  It was glorious!

I finished off with an off arms exercise, 100 cable crunches to work on my abs. So really I did 600 reps, but thats just between you and me, 500 arms, 100 abs.  I had time for more exercises too, but unfortunately my arms had enough so I didn't want to risk injury so I bailed on weight training and did 15 on the elliptical before hitting the shower.  It was a solid day for training.

Tonight is Leg Day for me, and since I gym while at work (my work provides time to gym) I am going to make sure I can barely walk by the time the gym time is over.  I'm not sure what I am going to do, but I know this, my legs will be sore tomorrow!

#Fitness - Welcoming New Years Resolutioners!

        0

        Welcoming New Years Resolutioners:

        Table of Contents

With New Year's right around the corner I decided to take the time to establish some ground rules for welcoming the new people and their resolutions to the gym!

These are some ground rules that everyone can live by.  Remember these people decided to make a change in their life so lets help them stick to it by not scaring them away or making them feel uncomfortable.

          Keep your eyes on yourself:

Nobody likes being watched while working out, especially people who have decided to lose weight. Don't stare or gawk.  This goes for for people too just because they are fit or good looking doesn't mean you get to stare.  This scares people away.

          Mind your own business:

I don't care if you see someone doing something in a way you wouldn't. Leave them be, unless they ask for your help or opinion don't intrude into their workout session.  It makes people comfortable when someone just chimes in about their routine. You do my know their limitations. Perhaps they have a medical reason for only quarter repping. Just stay out of their business.

          Be kind:

If someone asks for a spot or advice feel free but don't over due it with the advice. People new to the gym can often get overloaded by comments and knowledge. Direct answers with no fluff. If they want the help they will keep asking. Don't blow smoke up their asses with your horror stories or what not. Just the facts and keep it quick to avoid overturning them.

          Stink Factor:

I cannot stress this enough. Cleanup the equipment when you're done and make sure you wear deodorant and clean gym gear.  Veterans of the gym often forget that they stink or wear the same gear as the previous day. That's offensive and new people will often bail because they don't like the smell.  This is only for those who don't shower and clean themselves. I know most gym goers are super good about this.  Which brings me to the next point.

          Shower etiquette:

I know not all gyms have separate shower stalls. So keep your eyes on your own 'equipment'.  This is just common sense and should be adhered to by everyone.  If you can't help yourself and you gotta look at someones junk in the shower, perhaps you should buy a home gym and stop going to a public one because your rude and disrespectful.
